Basketball Without Borders Camp Los Angeles Standouts

Style of Play:

The Basketball Without Borders Camp is a showcase camp that features some of the best high school players of international descent. The camp starts with drills and individual skills, then players compete against each other in games and scrimmages. This camp was more guard heavy and big man heavy. The type of offense being run is pick and roll, post ups, dribble handoffs, and transition. The type of players that stood out include pick and roll ball-handling guards who could score taking advantage of switches or facilitate for teammates, slashing guards who use their quick and explosive first step to blow by defenders and get to the rim, bigs who use their mobility and quickness to roll to the rim and get high-percentage shots inside, rim running bigs who are quick and fluid getting down the floor, and lastly post up bigs who could use their size to their advantage getting deep post positioning, back down smaller defenders, and shoot over them.

Anderson Diaz

Anderson Diaz is a guard who aggressively attacks the rim in the open court and in the half-court. He is quick, explosive, and under control. He can change speed and direction making it tough for defenders to stay in front of him. He can start drives slow and speed up as he gets closer to the rim or start drives fast and slow down as he gets closer to the rim. He can operate as a pick and roll ball-handler getting to his spot for a floater with good touch. He gets his floater up high making it a tough shot to contest. Despite being an undersized guard, he doesn't shy away from attacking bigger players and finishing through them by contorting his body or getting his shot over their length. He finds ways to get to the free-throw line and converts free throws at a high rate. Off the ball he operates as a catch and shoot three-point shooter moving constantly along the three-point line, relocating, and finding the open space. He moves from corner to corner or wing to wing and doesn't get stagnant. He has a quick release and fluid shooting mechanics. He is an inside-out player setting an inside presence and then expanding his range as the game moves on.

He has a good balance between finding his own offense scoring and facilitating for his teammates. As a passer, he finds teammates in the pick and roll establishing an effective two-man game with bigs on his team and on drive and kick and off dribble penetration. He quickly finds the big rolling to the rim with a pocket pass setting them up for high-percentage shots inside. When getting hedged, blitzed, or double teamed in the pick and roll he makes athletic passes in mid-air to get the ball through size and length. In drive and kick situations and off dribble penetration he gets deep in the paint, collapses the defense, and sets up three-point shooters for high-percentage catch and shoot threes.

Despite being undersized, he competes on the defensive end and is a scrappy defender. He moves well laterally, has defensive lateral quickness, and makes things tough for his matchup. As a team defender, he plays help defense in the post doubling and trying to generate steals. He struggles defensively when having to get through picks. He lacks the frame to take contact on the screen, which takes him out of the play initially, but he gives effort recovering and trying to get back into the possession.

Ricards Aizpurs is a big guard with a strong frame and broad shoulders that he uses to his advantage to get downhill and keep defenders off him. He can start drives fast and slow down as he gets closer to the rim or start drives slow and speed up as he gets closer to the rim. His aggressiveness getting to the rim combined with his frame makes him a threat to draw fouls and get to the free-throw line at a high rate. He was very right-hand dominant and operated mostly on the right side for most of camp, but defenders still had a tough time game planning for him, and he got to wherever he wanted. He showed flashes of finishing on the left side with his left hand when defenders forced him to that side. In the pick and roll, he comes around picks and gets to his spot for a three-pointer off the dribble. When shooting threes in isolations, he can create separation from the defender with a step-back jump shot. He has a quick release, fluid shooting mechanics, lift and elevation getting off the ground, and touch. As a bigger guard, he can generate offense in the post by backing down smaller guards and using his strength to create advantages. He is not only a ball-dominant guard but can also play off the ball moving along the three-point line, relocating, and finding the open space for high-percentage catch and shoot three-pointers.

He is a high-level passer. He has a good balance between finding his own offense and creating looks for others. He can find teammates in the pick and roll, coming around off-ball screens or pindowns, and cutting to the rim to set them up for high-percentage shots. He can make tough passes in mid-air to pass over pressure and double teams coming his way.

He is a scrappy defender who stays in front of his matchup and makes things tough. He has the physicality and strength to take away drives and paint touches. He makes the right reads going under picks when matched against drivers and going over picks when matched against shooters, showing his understanding of personnel and his IQ. 

Caleb Ourigou

Caleb Ourigou is a rim running big in transition. He is quick and explosive getting down the floor allowing him to get high-percentage dunks and layups. In the half-court, he is a post presence. He demands the ball and fights for deep post positioning. He has size, strength, physicality, touch, footwork, and poise operating in the post. He navigates around the defenders finding tight spaces and angles he can get to and finish inside. He has the mobility and fluidity to spin off defenders in the post and get to the rim. He is effective in the pick and roll or slipping picks getting inside for high-percentage shots where the pick and roll ball-handler can find him. He is an athletic above the rim finisher in the pick and roll and slipping pick.

He gets extra possessions and second-chance opportunities by grabbing offensive rebounds and limits extra possessions and second-chance opportunities for the other team by grabbing defensive rebounds. He converts second-chance opportunities into points with putback dunks.

On the defensive end, he is a rim protector and defensive anchor. He has timing and instincts blocking shots. He keeps the ball inbounds when blocking shots allowing his team to create offense from his defense. He comes up with timely switches and help defense when teammates don't fight through screens. He has the length to force the pick and roll ball-handler into tough contested long twos from mid-range. He defends the post well walling up, being a physical presence, and taking away deep post positioning. He forces tough contested off-balance shots in the post away from the basket. He is quick on rotations and closing out to three-point shooters allowing him to contest, alter, or block three-point shots. There isn't a defensive situation that he couldn't handle at this Basketball Without Borders camp.

Obinna Ekezie Jr. operates in the pick and roll as a roll man setting hard picks to free up his teammates. He is quick and mobile rolling to the rim. He is a lob threat with good hands and athletic above the rim finishing. He has shown flashes as a pick and pop threat with a quick release and fluid shooting mechanics. He isn't afraid to shoot when defenders sag off him and dare him to. He can operate in the post with his size, strength, and physicality. He can get deep post positioning and back down smaller defenders. He gets to a hook shot that he can finish over both shoulders. He isn't as effective shooting turnaround shots because of his lack of balance and flat shot. He can face up from mid-range and shoot over smaller defenders with good touch. He can operate in dribble handoffs getting his teammates looks or going straight into pick and roll after. When the dribble handoff isn't there, he showed flashes of having a good enough handle to put the ball on the floor, take a few dribbles, and get to the rim against smaller defenders.

He has a big size advantage which lets him be active on the offensive glass to get extra possessions and second-chance opportunities while limiting extra possessions and second-chance opportunities for the opposing team.

On the defensive end, he is a rim protector. He has the size, timing, instincts, and length to block and alter shots.

Swann Penda

Swann Penda understands his role, makes good decisions, and plays within the flow of the offense which shows his high basketball IQ. In transition he operates on leak-outs running the floor well, filling the lanes, and understanding spacing. He is a lob threat with good hands in the open floor. When he gets a chance to advance the ball in transition off a defensive rebound, he uses his strength and frame to shield off defenders and get all the way to the rim. He is constantly moving without the ball and finding the open space. His main skillset is cutting to the rim or getting catch and shoot threes. He can execute backdoor cuts or cuts from the wings. He gets dribble handoffs into catch and shoot three-pointers. He has a quick release and fluid shooting mechanics. Despite creating opportunities for himself with his movement off the ball, he didn't have an effective passer on his team to find him on those cuts and in a camp setting there isn't familiarity playing with these guys. He is an effective crosscourt passer and drive and kick passer finding the open man. He rebounds well with a high motor on the glass and rebounding out of his zone.

Paul Osaruyi is a big who uses his size and physical strength to take advantage of mismatches and smaller defenders he matches up with in the post. He has poise and the ability to get deep post positioning. He goes to a hook shot with touch when matched against smaller defenders, and a turnaround shot with balance and footwork against defenders of the same size or bigger. He can operate from mid-range with a face-up game. His mid-range jumper allows him to operate and excel in pick and pop scenarios as well. His game is more suited for the half-court, but in transition he is skilled and a crafty finisher after rim running, catching the ball from the three-point line, taking a few dribbles, and getting to the rim. He can initiate dribble handoffs and handoffs with his teammates setting them up for three-pointers or drives to the rim. He has effective ball protection, makes the right reads, and gets the ball to where it needs to go on dribble handoffs or handoffs.

He has good activity on the glass getting extra possessions and second-chance opportunities. He uses his body to gain a rebounding advantage blocking out the opposing team's rebounder and positions himself to get tip-in putbacks. He converts on second-chance points having a nice finishing touch in the paint when tipping the ball in.

Ignas Stombergas operates in transition as a rim running big. He is quick getting down the floor but can lose body control as he gets closer to the rim. He got more comfortable with the fast pace and transition play as the camp moved on and he played more games, becoming a more efficient and athletic finisher. In the half-court, he operates in the pick and roll either setting picks or slipping picks and using his quickness and mobility to roll to the rim. This allows his team to run a quick pick and roll offense. He is a lob threat with good hands in pick and roll situations. He has an effective back to the basket game where he gets deep post positioning, is quick to go up for his shot before the help comes, has good touch, and can finish hook shots over both shoulders. Overall, he can handle physicality, plays through it, and doesn't shy away from contact which gets him a good amount of free-throw opportunities. With his size, he can get extra possessions and second-chance opportunities, converting them into points with putback tip-ins and a nice finishing touch in the paint.

On defense, he plays in drop coverage. He has a good feel for not dropping back too much to the basket and uses his size to contest or alter the shot.

When teams start crowding the paint because he is so effective as a straight-line driver, he has shown flashes of being a crafty finisher with good footwork and a variety of finishes he can use to get around defenders. He can operate in guard to guard actions slipping picks and finding open space inside for high-percentage shots. Off the ball, he operates as a catch and shoot three-point shooter. He moves well along the three-point line, is constantly moving, and finds the open space. He has a quick release, fluid shooting mechanics, and deep range. He has a high motor as a rebounder grabbing rebounds out of his zone. After grabbing rebounds, he can get out in transition as a ball-handler. He is quick, explosive, and has big strides pushing the pace making it hard for defenders to stay in front of him and contain him. In transition, he can get into pull-up three-point shots off the dribble or all the way to the rim. In the open court his athletic finishing really shows.

On the offensive end, he keeps his game simple getting easy fast-break points by leaking out or pushing the pace as a ball-handler going the length of the court. He is very aggressive getting to the rim and is always looking to go downhill with the ball in his hands. He has the body and frame to shield off defenders and keep them behind him on his hip or back. He has a quick first step and burst that lets him blow by defenders and plays at a slow controlled pace that makes him unpredictable. He has poise and the ability to play off 2 feet when driving to the rim. He can attack from both the right and left sides and finish with both hands. When he attracts pressure getting into the paint, he can find cutters with a dump-off pass or shooters for a catch and shoot look.

Defensively, he struggles getting through picks. He is too upright, doesn't move well laterally, and doesn't fight through them. He doesn't give much effort recovering, which makes him reliant on switches.

The next step for his development is to be more of a crafty finisher with better footwork. Right now, he is too reliant on straight-line driving and needs more variety in his finishes and craftiness so he can finish around defenders when they crowd the paint. Off the ball, he moves along the three-point line and finds the open space for quality three-point looks. His shot is a work in progress and still needs development. He rushes his shot and has a flat shot.

As a passer, he is best operating in drive and kick and off dribble penetration and in transition. He gets deep in the paint, collapses the defense, and finds the open man for a shot or facilitates ball movement. In transition, he is quick to find the rim running big and advance the ball for easy fast-break points.

On the defensive end, though undersized, he can fight through picks with defensive lateral quickness, moving well laterally, and having a low base.

Jahmai Drayton

Jahmai Drayton has the most success operating in the half-court as a cutter and pick and roll threat. On cuts, he can find the open space in the paint and make himself available for guards to find him. He is an athletic above the rim finisher in the paint and a lob threat with good hands. His long reach makes it easier to catch tough lob passes through traffic and that can be off target at times. In the pick and roll, he sets good hard picks and uses his quickness and mobility to roll into the paint for high-percentage shots. Rim running is an area for improvement, as he is slow and stiff getting up the floor.

On the defensive end, he is a rim protector. He rotates quickly from the weak side and blocks shots. He has timing, instincts, and covers a lot of ground when blocking shots. He is disciplined jumping straight up without fouling.
